Curriculum

Carden Conejo School provides students with a well-rounded education through an integrated and sequential curriculum. The comprehensive Carden elementary curriculum helps prepare students for challenging secondary schools and higher education. Excellent study habits, critical thinking, and self-discipline are integrated into each aspect of the elementary curriculum. Our goal is to teach children to think and develop good judgment.  Students are held accountable for their school work and their behavioral choices, which foster the development of self-discipline and self-esteem.

Our core academic program includes Language Arts (Spelling, Literature, Grammar, Creative Writing, Composition), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies (History and Geography), and Foreign Language.

Cursive Handwriting is introduced in the 1st Grade, 3rd quarter. Students hone this skill in 2nd Grade, and will continue to write daily in cursive handwriting in subsequent grade levels. Carden Conejo’s homeroom teachers teach the Language Arts and Social Studies curriculum. All students benefit from being taught by single-subject Specialist Teachers for Mathematics, Science, Languages, Music, Art, Computer, and Physical Education.

Mathematics-Singapore

World-Class Singapore Math
Carden Conejo School uses the world-class Singapore Math curriculum for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Singapore Math is based on the textbooks and syllabuses of Singapore’s national curriculum.  We have chosen this curriculum to offer our students the best and most current program available today.  In the latest PISA (Program for International Assessment) Singapore scored 2nd in the worldwide ranking just below Shanghai, China; whereas the United States scored 36th behind Asia, Russia and most of Europe.  The edition of Singapore Math we use here at Carden is in alignment with the California Standards.

The Singapore Math program emphasizes problem solving and model drawing, focusing on an in-depth understanding of mathematical concepts. The curriculum covers a relatively small number of topics, which are carefully sequenced by grade. Mathematical concepts are taught by moving from the manipulation of concrete items to pictorial representations, and finally to abstract representations. Students are expected to master each concept before moving on, as subsequent lessons build on prior concepts.
The curriculum emphasizes developing a concrete understanding of mathematical concepts by introducing manipulative materials and hands-on SMART Board exercises. The system includes word problems, written exercises and independent practice to solidify problem-solving and computational skills that are integral to cognitive progress in Math.

Singapore Math is taught by our two enthusiastic Specialist Math Teachers– Mrs. Brunasso (K – 3rd Grade) and Ms. Chong (3rd – 5th Grade).

Science – Foss

Our students love Science because it involves many hands-on investigations. They observe, identify, classify and describe to deepen their understanding of simple and complex scientific phenomena.

We have implemented the inquiry-based Full Option Science System (FOSS) curriculum developed at U.C. Berkeley.  Like the Carden Method, the FOSS program is correlated to human cognitive development.  The activities are matched to the way students think at different times in their lives.  Students are given the opportunity to solve problems, construct and evaluate experiments. FOSS investigations are carefully crafted to guarantee that the cognitive demands placed on students provide a springboard for progressive growth.  FOSS is a standards-based program that aligns completely with the Science Content Standards for California Public Schools and the Science Framework for California.

Students who study science with FOSS are able to learn scientific concepts, solve problems, express their understanding, and apply their knowledge in a variety of novel ways.  Students learn concepts through exploration of hands-on activities, which require an evaluation and a recording of the findings based on the Scientific Method. The learning is solidified with reading, writing and science class discussions.
Science is taught by two Specialist Science Teachers– Mrs. Stone (K – 3rd Grade) and Ms. Macias-Flavin (4th – 5th Grade).

Computer Studies & Technology

Carden Conejo School’s Computer and Technology Lab consists of 20 Dell computers.  Students receive formal technology classes once per week for at least 45 minutes. Technology classes start in Kindergarten.  Carden students learn to keyboard by touch, and become proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and to master Media and Internet Research.

During the second half of each unit, students create a project based on a current classroom topic.  The purpose of these integration projects is to use the technology tools the students have learned and integrate these tools with a relevant classroom project to enhance and reinforce learning. The technology instructor collaborates with each grade level teacher to produce valuable technology-infused lesson plans.

SMART Board technology is installed in every Elementary homeroom classroom as well as the Math and Science Labs.
Chromebook and Tablet technology has recently been introduced. This technology is used thoughtfully in a classroom setting that allows teacher-guided access to math programs, Rosetta Stone (foreign language), and to develop learning experiences in the areas of creative writing and artistic expression.

Foreign Language

Carden Conejo’s curriculum includes a strong base in foreign language.

French is taught as a second language from the Primary School through 5th Grade.  This language was chosen by Mae Carden because of the many French words that comprise the English language.  Grammar is taught in the French language and its structure is similar to English.  As students progress, they learn verb conjugations and sentence structure.

The ultimate reward in the study of foreign languages is the realization students have when they connect words and understanding between French and English.

Language Arts, Reading & Social Studies

At Carden Conejo School, our integrated Language Arts and Social Studies curriculum is led by each classroom’s homeroom teacher, providing students with a consistent and nurturing learning experience throughout the day.

Utilizing the Carden Method, students engage in daily exercises that reinforce grammar, spelling, and sentence structure, fostering strong writing skills and critical thinking. Reading instruction emphasizes phonics and mental imagery, enabling students to comprehend and analyze texts deeply. Through exposure to classic literature and historical narratives, students develop cultural awareness and empathy. Our Social Studies program interweaves history and geography, encouraging students to explore the world around them and understand their place within it. This comprehensive, teacher-led approach ensures each child builds a solid foundation in language and social understanding—preparing them for future academic success.

Music

Music and Art are an integral part of the Carden Conejo School Arts program. In these subjects the children experience the freedom to express beauty and individuality.

Class Plays

Carden Conejo Student Class Plays

All Carden Conejo students perform carefully selected Classroom Plays on the Auditorium stage. Every year, students work with their homeroom teacher and the Specialist Music teacher to present an age-appropriate play or musical.

Each class presents their play to their fellow students during the Dress Rehearsal. The final play is then presented to parents, guardians and invited guests.

Daily PE & Sports

Carden Conejo Physical Education

Carden Conejo students enjoy daily Physical Education classes, which include stretching and core training, weekly endurance training, hand-eye and foot-eye coordination and balance.

Our program emphasizes good sportsmanship.  Each class meets daily for P.E. to develop their skills and their sense of fair play.

The sports program increases in difficulty as the children become more capable.

Each day the thirty minute session begins with a warm-up consisting of stretching and running, followed by one skill, and then a game to use what the students have learned.

Various sports include soccer, football, baseball, track, and volleyball.  Sports skills are developed throughout the year.

In the second semester, students also participate in the National Presidential Physical Fitness Award Testing, which includes Sit and Reach, Sit Ups, Pull Ups, Shuttle Run, and Mile Run.

Friday Assembly

Carden Conejo Friday Assembly

During the weekly Friday Assembly, Carden Conejo students develop exceptional poise and public speaking skills through frequent opportunities to recite or perform onstage to a full auditorium of fellow students and parents.

Public Speaking is an integral part of a Carden education. It is something that alumni mention when they talk of skillsets learned at Carden Conejo that have enabled them to succeed.

Each Friday Assembly is lead by 5th grade hosts.  They begin with the Pledge of Allegiance and a patriotic song led by a selected class. Selected classes then contribute to Friday Assembly by performing a poem, song or instrumental performance for the school and parents. Along with the class play, each student performs on stage 20 times per year.

As a show of respect and tradition, students wear their more formal assembly uniforms for this important Friday event.

Giving Back

A Commitment to Community and Giving Back

At Carden Conejo, we believe in fostering a strong sense of responsibility, compassion, and service. In addition to academic achievement, our school partners with local non-profits and organizes a variety of community service initiatives throughout the year. These programs provide students with meaningful opportunities to give back and make a positive impact.

Each year, we participate in ongoing charitable partnerships, such as:

  • Casa Pacifica: Students create greeting cards for Halloween and Valentine’s Day and take part in the Holiday “Dove” Gift program.
  • Food Drives: We regularly collect non-perishable items in support of local food banks, with partners varying year to year.
  • Sustainability Efforts: Each year, we host an initiative focused on environmental awareness and giving back, such as recycling drives or donation programs.
  • Seasonal Drives: We collect and donate essential items based on community needs, including past efforts such as Halloween costume donations and holiday gift collections.

In addition to service projects, fundraising efforts primarily support the Carden Conejo Parents’ Association (CCPA) and school programs through events like the Scholastic Book Fair, See’s Candy sales, and the Jogathon. However, when specific needs arise—such as natural disasters or local community hardships—we shift our efforts to support charitable causes.

At Carden Conejo, we strive to provide a variety of service opportunities, ensuring our students grow with a sense of empathy and a commitment to making a difference.

Additionally, our Special Assemblies program, funded primarily by the Carden Conejo Parents’ Association, enhances students’ education by exposing them to health and fitness, culture, the arts, and more. These assemblies are held multiple times a year and contribute to a well-rounded learning experience.

Academic
Support

Academic Support is a scheduled time at the close of the school day (M-Th) designed to provide time for personalized support and completion of missing, make-up, or inadequate work.
If a student is absent due to illness or unforeseen circumstances, Academic Support allows the teacher(s) the time to catch the student up with as little down time as possible. Homeroom or Specialist teachers will determine if your child could benefit from a little extra instruction.

  • Our classes are intended to progress at a brisk pace so that the children are engaged, interested, and growing.  Because children learn at different rates and some concepts and skills require additional guided practice to acquire mastery, we address these opportunities after regular dismissal with Academic Support.
  • Students who do not present their completed homework at the assigned time will be requested to complete or redo the assignment during Academic Support that day.  Our teachers use homework to gauge each child’s mastery, promptly address misconceptions, and build upon each child’s prior knowledge to teach to mastery. Homework is a real-time tool that we believe gives each student a prompt chance to practice independently while lessons are still solidifying in recall.
  • Teachers will also request attendance of Academic Support if a student’s classroom work does not meet our standards for timeliness, neatness, or accuracy.  We value the children’s active time and rather than use physical education or lunch/recess time, Academic Support allows the teachers to counsel and supervise those who need reinforcement to make the most of their school day.
